Synopsis:
La Traición 1984 (The Betrayal) The story begins in 1917, after the Mexican Revolution has ended. General Eduardo Álvarez and his family are waiting for the train at the station, where they meet Manuel Fortuna, a young railway employee who will play an important role in their lives. Manuel falls in love with Andrea, the general’s eldest daughter, but a great divide separates them; in addition, Manuel lives with Mercedes, an older woman who adores him, and he does not want to hurt her.
The Álvarez family supports Carranza, and the General serves as secretary to President Venustiano Carranza. When Carranza is assassinated, the General refuses to support the new president, dictator Álvaro Obregón. He and his family plan to exile themselves to Querétaro, but his cousin Alejandro, also related to Obregón, convinces them to stay in the city. They reunite with Manuel, and Andrea, sure of her feelings, surrenders to him. However, painful circumstances cause Manuel to disappear, Andrea believes him dead, and she accepts the proposal of James Van Hallen, an English imperialist.
A large house in Mexico City, inherited from the Álvarez family, is divided by a wall, symbolizing Eduardo’s rejection of his cousin Alejandro, who had taken advantage of his sister Catalina and ultimately married her. By 1919, the other side of the house is opened to welcome the large family of the lively Nora Álvarez, Alejandro’s daughter and Manuel’s wife who had not died. They are all Obregón supporters, including Manuel, who left his revolutionary past when he married Nora. This is where he will reunite with Andrea, his lifelong love.
