Juan Daniel Villegas, nicknamed "Johnny," is a Mexican truck driver and family man who deeply loves his wife, Ana María. Due to his work, he makes constant trips between Mexico and the US, transporting different goods in his truck. On one of these trips, when stopping at a roadside restaurant, Johnny is about to run over an attractive young woman from a small town named Tania, whom he falls deeply in love with. His life becomes very complicated as a result of this new love.
Tania is the waitress at the restaurant, owned by her mother and where Johnny is a frequent customer. At first, the young woman does not know that her beloved is a married man.
Johnny has several enemies in Tijuana, where he was blamed by the Montegarza family for the death of their eldest son, Bernardo, in a strange traffic accident. One of them is Raymundo, a police officer in love with Tania, along with his assistant Ángel; both were trying to capture Bernardo Montegarza, as he was the leader of a drug trafficking group known as "Medusa."
It is later discovered that Johnny did not kill Bernardo (in reality, it should have been Johnny who died in the accident), but that he is still alive. Johnny remains torn between staying with his wife or his lover, but his dilemma is resolved when Tania is murdered by Bernardo.
Johnny and Ana María end up reconciling, but their story does not have a happy ending. The final scene shows the couple lying down after an ordinary day. Johnny has nightmares about Tania's death and mentions her name while sleeping. Upon waking up the next day, he discovers that Ana María and their children have left and finds a note explaining why they abandoned him.
