It is the story of Aurora, a beautiful teenager who was stigmatized at birth by Macrina the midwife as a creature born of evil, bearer of misfortune, pain, and death. This is because she discovers a skull-shaped mole on the girl's belly, in addition to her mother dying right after childbirth. Anselmo, the girl's father, cannot overcome the loss of his wife Carmen, but pours all his love into the little girl and is determined to protect her by keeping her away from the townspeople who label her as an evil creature.
At the age of 12, we see Aurora transformed into a cheerful, fun, hardworking girl. She likes to help her father in the harvest and enjoys going fishing with him in the afternoons and telling him all the stories and novels she reads. Anselmo has taken care to maintain her interest in learning, which is why Aurora longs to go to school like all the other kids in town, to which Anselmo flatly refuses every time the girl insists.
Aurora loves nature, lacking friends she has made plants and animals her playmates. Father Basilio is the only person who visits and supports them.
Aurora and her father live in a small house that borders the property of Severo Trujillo, a man of sinister, repugnant, and gloomy appearance... Severo holds a grudge against Anselmo because he was always in love with his wife and takes out his hatred by limiting the water supply that feeds Anselmo and Aurora's crops.
Anselmo is afraid that Severo will harm his daughter, as he blames her for the death of Carmen, the only woman he loved. So he warns Aurora to stay away from that man.
Aurora's curious spirit leads her one day to disobey her father and approach the town. The first person Aurora encounters is a kind man who gives her an ice cream because she has no way to pay him. At first, Aurora does not understand why her father has denied her to know those people who are so good, but everything changes when she meets Macrina, who recognizes her and informs her of the supposed curse weighing on her. The people identify her and attack her, and it is Rodrigo, a 15-year-old boy, who intervenes to defend her. From that moment on, Aurora and Rodrigo begin a beautiful friendship that will eventually turn into their first and only love.
Rodrigo goes abroad to study high school and promises to return to Aurora. Anselmo falls seriously ill, before dying, he asks his daughter to look for Aunt Brígida in Mexico City to help her. Severo takes advantage of the situation and tries to abuse Aurora, the girl flees in search of Mrs. Brígida, who turns her into her unpaid servant and forbids her to call her aunt. Aurora is always grateful to have a roof over her head and food, she will learn to love her aunt despite her sour character.
Nothing dims Aurora's happiness of being able to fulfill her dream of studying, even if she has to do it in secret from Brígida.
